Day 1: Madison

The first leg of our Hunger Tour has already started to open our eyes to the many facets of feeding and caring for people who do not have enough.

We made it to Madison, Wis., in time for lunch – which we ate in a park overlooking Monona Lake across from the state capitol.

This afternoon we worked in a community garden that serves local food pantries. The goal is to provide fresh, healthy, locally-grown produce to supplement the usual canned goods and packaged food that people typically donate. Thomas, the garden developer, told us that on average an hour of volunteer labor produces 50 pounds of food. We contributed to that today by transplanting cauliflower, harvesting broccoli and onions, watering and LOTS of weeding. The work was hard but the weather was perfect and we all had a lot of fun.

Tonight we ate dinner at a place that serves free community meals for lunch and dinner 5 days a week. It was harder simply sitting down at the table with strangers than it would have been to work in the kitchen or wash dishes. During conversation after the meal Paul, the site director, shared that his goal is create community and offer hospitality to all who desire it. Sounds like creating a place for all to belong, doesn’t it?
